Variable speed drives, soft starters and motors

We select, install and commission variable speed drives, soft starters and motors for pumps, fans, conveyors and machines, and set them up to suit the load instead of leaving them on factory defaults.
Large control panel under construction with drives and PLC mounted

What we do

  • Drive and soft starter selection and sizing for the actual load
  • Replacing direct-on-line starters to cut start-up current and mechanical wear
  • WEG motors and drives supplied and installed
  • Constant pressure and level control straight from the drive, or through the PLC
  • Cabling, earthing and filtering that keep drives from upsetting other equipment
  • Fault finding on tripping drives and failed motors

Problems we solve

  • A pump that hammers the pipework every time it starts
  • A drive that trips and nobody knows why
  • High power bills from pumps and fans running flat out all day
Brands: WEG motors and drives, plus drives from the main control brands we work with.

Questions

Will a VSD save power?

On pumps and fans that do not need full speed all the time, usually yes, because the power drawn falls sharply as the speed drops. On a load that always runs flat out the saving is small, and we will say so.

Do drives cause problems with other equipment?

They can if they are installed poorly. Correct cable, earthing and filtering prevent most interference and motor bearing damage.
